Member for Lockyer, Ian Rickuss MP said he had serious safety concerns at work that has been carried out on the Warrego Highway at Maroney Road.
Mr Rickuss said Main Roads had undertaken improvements to the known black spot area (Warrego Highway/McDonalds intersection), however, I feel that by forcing trucks and vehicles to do U-turns further down the Highway at Maroney Road, they have actually created another danger area for truck drivers and motorists.
“With access from Villis Road soon to be restricted, cars and particularly trucks will be forced to carry out u-turns at Maroney Road, crossing two lanes of Highway traffic, with oncoming traffic doing speeds of 100 kph”.
“I have proposed that Main Roads visit the site, while Traffic Controllers are still present, and undertake a trial just to see how difficult and unsafe these manoeuvres will be, not only for truck drivers but also for highway motorists”, Mr Rickuss said.
“I am very disappointed that Main Roads have declined my offer, I do realise that these upgrades have been undertaken based on crash data and that on paper in an air-conditioned office these plans may look all well and good, however, when it comes down to b-doubles and other vehicles physically negotiating these new road works it is a completely different outcome”.
“I have called on the Minister to have his department rethink these changes - they will not work for heavy vehicles.” Mr Rickuss said.
